500miles is a Charity that supports amputees and other disabled people in Malawi and Zambia, mainly focuses in the delivery and development of prosthetic and orthotic services. Prostheses are devices which replace body parts which are missing. Orthoses are supports for body parts which don't function properly.
In Malawi and Zambia thousands of men, women and children lose limbs, or the use of them, due to disease, accident or poverty. Many lose their livelihoods, homes or families - some even die.
Less than 5% of people who could use prostheses and orthoses get them and these countries are among the poorest in the world. The national health services are under-funded and within these services, rehabilitation is a very low priority.
