Genoa and its port are a logistical hub for international arms trafficking. Every month, ships loaded with tanks, helicopters, and explosives pass through the port of this Italian city, destined for Saudi Arabia to be used in wars in Syria or Yemen.
However, a group of dockworkers, part of the Collective of Autonomous Dock Workers (CALP), has decided to stand against the powerful arms industry and its trade. They have been fighting since 2019 when they successfully prevented a ship bound for Jeddah from loading generators for drones used in the war in Yemen.
The primary reason behind their actions is ethical. They refuse to participate in any process that contributes to the killing of innocent people: "How is it possible that our ports are open to arms exports, but later closed to those fleeing the consequences of these weapons?"
They have received unexpected support from Pope Francis, who invited them to the Vatican. Despite this, they are under investigation for criminal association and are ignored by institutions, political parties, and trade unions.
