On Thursday, April 18, New York Police Department arrested Palestinian protesters and students at Columbia University, after president Minouche Shafik's request. Students had been occupying part of campus since Wednesday, around 4 a.m., calling for the university to divest from institutions that have ties to Israel. The encampment was filled with music and prayers, from Muslim and Jewish students, who developed their own society without a roof - with shareable food, clothes, hygiene items, etc. Pro-Israel protesters and students tried to disrupt the Palestinian occupation, which they were calling it terrorism.

On the 13th day, Columbia University delegates and security handed a notice to members of the occupation, asking them to evacuate before 2 p.m. to avoid academic repercussions. Student protesters answered by throwing it in the trash, duct taping it to the ground at the entrance of the camp so people could step on it, burning it, and taking over Hamilton Hall. They named their new building Hind’s Hall as an homage to Hind Rajab, a young girl who was found dead 12 days after she called for help, and before the medics could arrive.

On Tuesday, April 30th, police's counter terrorism unit broke into the barricaded doors and arrested the pro-Palestine students who had occupied the building. Officers pushed students who were watching and a couple of journalists out of campus, threatening to arrest anyone who was seeing outside, dismantling the encampment.
