On Friday, September 4th from 4:00 to 7:00p.m. Vermont Arts Council and Helen Day Art Center will open Line Up - Vermont Sculpture, an exhibition of five Vermont sculptors in the gardens at the Vermont Arts Council on State St. in Montpelier, VT.Long a haven for creatives, Vermont is home to a talent pool of sculptors. Undaunted by large scale or the challenges of punishing winters, these artists are creating formidable outdoor work that engages passers-by and transforms the space in which it is placed.

Line Up - Vermont Sculpture brings together sophisticated and significant sculptures from five artists whose work helps shape the landscape of outdoor sculpture throughout the state of Vermont, and in some cases whose influence and reach can be seen internationally.

Ted Ceraldi, Richard Erdman, Rodrigo Nava, Meg McDevitt and Judith Wrend have populated the Vermont Arts Council grounds with durable, beautiful forms. The work is primarily abstract, engaging the viewer in the joy of looking. Judith Wrend's Voulez Vous is kinetic and responds to even light winds. The two elements of her sculpture appear to turn their attention this way and that - often in unison - like two figures side by side.Rodrigo Nava's welded polyhedrons flank one of the walking approaches to the Council offices. The works are partially ballooned from the inside - Nava creates controlled explosions during the final stages of creation. They too tempt the viewer to anthropomorphic imagery - they resemble a breakaway group from a much larger herd. In fact, Nava is prolific and these pieces are part of an extensive body of work.

Join the Vermont Arts Council, the Guest Curators, and several of the artists on Friday, September 4th at 4:00pm for the opening reception.

Since 1965, the Vermont Arts Council has been the state's primary provider of funding, advocacy, and information for the arts in Vermont. Through its programs and services, the Council strives to increase public awareness of the positive role artists and arts organizations play in communities and to maximize opportunities for Vermonters to experience the arts in everyday life.
