The second most populous city of Iran in the northeast of the country houses the shrine of Imam Riza, a descendant of the Prophet Mohammed and the eight Shia Imam. It's a site of Pilgrimage for Shia Muslims.

As well as being a spiritual center, the city also is also home to the first century poet Ferdowsi's tomb.
