Raymond McCrea Jones is a photographer & filmmaker based in the Southern U.S. who started his career at The New York Times before relocating to the South and transitioning to independent work. He is a visual storyteller with experience in photography, video, large productions, higher education, journalism, and brand strategy through imagery.


He launched his career as an intern at The New York Times, working his way up through the photography department and collaborating extensively with Andrew DeVigal and the multimedia team during a transformative period in digital news. Known for his unique blend of contemporary reportage and storytelling  portraiture Jones creates imagery driven by boundless curiosity. Since leaving the New York Times, he has worked in the CNN newsroom, in video production within higher education, built a thriving freelance career and served as Habitat for Humanity internationals in-house photographer.


Jones also founded ATL Photo Night in 2016 with his partner Kevin Liles, which hosts a monthly gathering interviewing creatives with the aim of "investigating the creative process to conversation.” Since 2018, he has also served as Creative Director of Creature Studio, which he co-owns with his wife, Jenn Jones. Jones has been represented by Redux Pictures since 2011. Jones’s creative approach has attracted commissions from leading brands and publications worldwide.


As a director of both photography and motion, he is a steady hand with a purposeful vision, drawing on his experience at The New York Times to inform his passionate storytelling and leadership. He is recognized for his exceptional positivity and efficiency on productions as well as his natural ability to connect with those he works with. In his personal work, Jones places emphasis on long-term projects and has published two monographs: Out of Step: Faces of Straight Edge (2007, Empire Press) and Birth of a Warrior: Ten Weeks in Basic Training (2015, University Press of New England). His latest endeavor the Palmetto Portrait Project debuted October 2024. Jones’s photography has been exhibited in galleries and museums and featured in publications worldwide.
