Sarah Pabst is a photojournalist and visual storyteller based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Her work focuses on women, human rights, and environmental issues. She also works on long-term autobiographical personal projects on motherhood, grief, and the interconnected relationship between humans and nature. A member of
Ayün Fotógrafas, a collective of eight women photographers united by Latin America. A
National Geographic Explorer, and fellow and grantee of the
Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Sarah is a member of
Women Photograph,
Foto-Féminas, and
Journal Collective.
In 2022, Obscura commissioned her to photograph for
The World Today, an NFT project of 139 photographers documenting their world. In the same year, she was a mentor for the
Women Photograph Mentorship Program. In 2021, she published her first book,
Morning Song, with
Raya Editorial, a deeply personal story on motherhood, lockdown, pregnancy loss, and love, that was a finalist of the
Lucie Photo Book Awards and named one of the 25 best books of 2021 by the
Photographic Museum of Humanity.
Her work is regularly published in numerous international outlets such as The New York Times, National Geographic, Time, Financial Times Magazine, Washington Post, Zeit, Der Spiegel, The Wall Street Journal, California Sunday Magazine, Bloomberg Market Magazine, Vice, GUP and Le Monde, among others. Sarah is a regular contributor to Bloomberg News. Her work was shown in different exhibitions worldwide in countries such as Argentina, Germany, Greece, Brazil, and Mexico.
She has received numerous awards, grants, and recognitions, including Picture of the Year Latam (POY Latam) (2021 & 2023), Photographer of the Year 2021 & 2023 (Second prize & finalist); Women Photographer Grant of the Photographic Museum of Humanity (2nd Prize, 2022); Picture of the Year International (POYi) 2021 in the Covid-19 Personal Expression category for her project Morning Song (Second prize), National Geographic Emergency Fund for Journalists (2020), XXXIII Eddie Adams Masterclass (2020), Lensculture Emerging Talent Awards (2017), Burn /Magnum Foundation - Emerging Photographer Grant (2017), Arles' Voies Off (Finalist, 2017), Organ Vida Festival ( Winner, 2017), and Gomma Grant ( Finalist, 2017). Her work was further awarded an Honorable Mention at the International Photography Awards (IPA) two times bronze at the Paris Photo Awards (PX3) and a Juror Pick at the Daylight Awards 2021. She was three times nominated for the Joop Swart Masterclass (2017, 2018, 2019) and a winner of the Portfolio Revisions at FoLa and selected twice for Descubrimientos Photo España. In 2015 she won the 3rd Prize at the Picture of the Year LATAM and was awarded with the Canon Profifoto Grant 2014. Since 2015, she's been a featured Instagram photographer.
As a speaker, Sarah has presented her work and career with different organizations, such as the National Geographic Society, Disney, Hidden Compass, Women Photograph, and several Universities in the US, Mexico, and Argentina.
Sarah completed a Bachelor's / Master's Degree in Fine Arts, Spanish, and Education at the University of Cologne and the University of Wuppertal in Germany. Throughout the years, she has continued developing her professional skills as a photographer taking workshops with Antoine D'Agata, Yumi Goto, Ana Casas Broda, and Veronica Fieiras.
