Sayan Hazra is a documentary photographer and National Geographic Explorer based in India. His work examines the intersections of globalization, urbanization, ecology, and climate change, with a focus on urgent environmental crises.
He is a 2023 Director’s Fellow and a graduate of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York, where he specialized in Documentary Practice and Visual Storytelling. Sayan is also a Computer Science Engineering graduate (2007). He spent a decade as a software professional before fully committing to photography in 2018, transforming his passion into a career in documentary storytelling. He was the only Asian recipient of the VII Foundation International Scholarship, attending the 2018-2019 Photojournalism Masterclasses in Warsaw, Poland. In 2020, he was included in the Diversify Photo database as a photographer of color from the Global South.
In 2023, Sayan was awarded a National Geographic Society Storytelling Grant for his project on human-designed greenspaces.
