A Bunch
A Bunch. The young American families who want more than 2.5 kids. Having grown up as an only child, I was always fascinated by big families. The idea of a house full of noise and companions with whom to play or fight filled me with curiosity. Although I was always comfortable as an only child, I desperately wanted to have siblings. So, a few years ago, I set out to document my friend’s big family in Tennessee. Then, they had 4 kids but wanted more – a stark contrast to what I was used to in my native northern Spain, where most families consist of 1 or 2 kids.
Approaching my early forties as I documented them, I was also posing questions about starting a family of my own. Though I’d always assumed I’d want kids, I wasn’t sure when or how or with whom. But as I grew through my thirties, the timing – or the person – never felt right. Then, an experience living alongside my best friend’s maternity made my decision clear.
(At a time when average household sizes are shrinking across America,) This is a portrait of a house full of life and a young family that always knew they wanted a big family.
