Shuran Huang 黃舒然 (she/her) is a Cantonese photographer based in Washington, D.C. Her photography focuses on politics, immigration, human rights, and diaspora experiences, revealing the nuanced and intimate moments in between.

Shuran speaks English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, and Spanish. She is HEFAT certified with the International Women's Media Foundation.

Born in a small Hakka village, Rénhuá (仁化), in China, Shuran's journey as an immigrant began when her father embarked on a career as an epidemiologist in various countries. Despite many hurdles, her parents’ mission to uplift communities in crisis never wavered. They formed a duo: her epidemiologist father provided medical care in communities suffering from disease outbreaks; her translator mother empowered communities by building education programs. Their selflessness embodied empathy, sensitivity, and the transformative power of generosity. Guided by their example, Shuran explored and embraced visual storytelling—a universal language that shapes perceptions, challenges stereotypes and fosters unity among diverse communities.

Shuran holds a master’s degree in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in international journalism from Hong Kong Baptist University. She is also an adjunct professor and academic mentor at Sacred Heart University's School of Communication, Media, and the Arts.
