Day of Outrage (1987- 1988)
On December 20, 1986, Michael Griffith and two companions, Cedric Sandiford and Timothy Grimes, were attacked by a white mob outside of a pizza parlor in the predominantly Italian and Jewish neighborhood of Howard Beach. The mob attacked the three men. Michael Griffith walked on to the nearby freeway in order to escape but was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle.
His death sparked outrage in New York's African American communities and spurred two separate 'Days of Outrage,’ in December of 1987 and again in January of 1988 in protest of growing racial violence in the city.
