Sydney Walsh

Sydney 常娇 Walsh is a Chinese-American visual storyteller based in New York, NY and Northern NJ. She believes photography is a vital medium that removes language barriers and universally personalizes human experiences. Her work often combines documentary, photojournalism and fine art photography. She is especially interested in topics related to identity, cultural and ecological history, and stories connected to her home state of Florida.

She is available for freelance assignments locally and nationally. Recent clients and publications include: The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, CNN, NPR, NBC, AARP, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, Los Angeles Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Tampa Bay Times, Miami Herald, among others.

Previously, she worked at the Miami Herald as a Photo and Video Intern where she photographed, filmed and produced video for news, features, politics, sports, and long-form projects, including an opinion piece that was awarded a Pulitzer Prize. Sydney holds a BFA in Photojournalism from Corcoran School of the Arts + Design at George Washington University, where she was a Photo Editor for The GW Hatchet newspaper and served as Projects Chair for GW's chapter of National Press Photographers Association. She is an alumni of the Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIII and the AAJA Voices Fellowship.

She is an active member of Diversify Photo and the Asian American Journalists Association. She also enjoys experimenting with analog processes, taking her cat to the beach and making vegetarian dishes.
