In 2006 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for Final Salute, a project about the return of fallen US Marines killed in Iraq.
In 2003 he was a member of the team at the Rocky Mountain News that won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography and was a finalist for Feature Photography in 2010 for his work on Alzheimers in Colombia. Heisler is also a frequent contributor to Lens, New York Times' photo blog.
