Summary
Maleya is a delicacy among the Bamaasaba tribe who are part of the inhabitants of Mt.Elgon slopes, the maleya has one season every year and is harvested , then roasted this helps preserve it for long and reduce the weight load as they hike down from the Mount.
The delicacy has been enjoyed for centuries. The vegetable can only be found on the mountain bamboo forests and it has only been associated to the Bamasaaba who are the proud chefs and harvesters of this unique vegetable. Many generations have come and gone an this tradition will leave the test of time. They face restrictions when it comes to entry into the mountain reserve but during the harvest season the NFA ( National Forestry Authority) grants the natives access to go harvest the delicacy. The mountain is source to herbs and other vegetables unique to the Bamasaaba but Maleya comes first to the others.
