Mr. Konobas was a widely-loved resident of Synyak, who helped villagers by bringing them food while at least 200 people sheltered in a school during the Russian occupation last year. He joined the military after the village was retaken by Ukraine, and was killed on May 7 in the Luhansk region.

Bakhmut, which has seen intense fighting since the summer, has been devastated by thousands of artillery strikes, as Russian forces have mounted numerous attempts to take the city of approximately 73,000 civilians before the invasion last year. On the eastern bank of the river that runs through Bakhmut, the devastation is most apparent where heavy fighting has seen a few hundred yards of territory change hands between Ukrainian and Russian forces over the past few weeks. Few civilians remain, and of those who do, they are desperate for food and aid. Drone units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including that of the Skala Drone Unit, seek out the enemy in residential buildings, and forests where the trees have been cut down by the sheer scale of artillery.

The shelter housed nearly 60 people at one point, according to residents, and is now home to 20 people who remain. Since Lyman was retaken in early October, many residents continue living underground as shells fired by Russian forces continue to target the key railway hub. Electricity and water have only been restored to some areas.

The Ukrainian stronghold of Bakhmut has been heavily contested between Russian and Ukrainian forces for months. At least 90 percent of the city’s 73,000 people had fled by this time as shelling has intensified. For Ukrainian and Russian forces, Bakhmut was synonymous with a ‘meat grinder’ with artillery and small arms fire causing high casualties on both sides. The city fell to Russian forces in the late spring.
