Shinjuku Golden Gai
Summary
Known for years as a rather dangerous part of the Shinjuku district, Golden Gai has been a quieter place for some years now. The local mafia used to reign supreme. The popularity of these bars with foreign tourists has helped to mellow the little neighborhood. Covering an area of around 200 square meters, the Golden Gai is a lively night spot with an ever-growing number of bars. There are probably several hundred of them, most of them relatively unknown and hidden from view.
A popular spot for visiting tourists, it does have its rules. Some bars charge you as soon as you enter in order to select the occupants. Prices vary from one establishment to another. Drink prices also vary from bar to bar.
Some bars also offer snacks.
Decoration and ambience vary greatly from place to place. Certain looks and stickers also show that not everyone is welcome. Please respect the way the locals run the place. It's not uncommon to read that you're asked not to behave as you would in your country of origin.
But once you've taken these few remarks into account, you'll feel at home in the neighborhood. Often in good spirits. It's not unusual to come across employees exhausted by their day's work.
