intertwined: images of connection
The Halide Project
May 15 - June 26, 2022
As a mode of visual expression, photography has the power to elucidate that which we feel but perhaps cannot express satisfactorily with words. It allows us to examine intangible concepts and has the flexibility to allow for both their literal and abstract expression. Through photography, we can explore, depict, and even create the most indefinable and elusive of things; emotion. There is an intimacy that exists between photographer and subject, photograph and viewer, viewer and subject; the act of looking at a photograph creates a multi-directional relationship between all who have a connection with it, some of whom may never have met. This sense of connection – of discovering and creating community – has never felt so urgent to so many people, after two years of isolation and disconnect.
The artists in intertwined use photography to explore and express the unseen; the feeling of connection that exists within every phase of the photographic process. From collaborating with subjects and cultivating friendships to the intimacy of the studio to the tactile experience of the darkroom and the intensity of the editing process to the ultimate expression of sharing; the photograph claiming space on the gallery wall. These artists’ images depict connection – between family, friends, memory, history, and the natural world – and recontextualize the concept of “relationship” within both a personal and political framework. They invite viewers to join them in this intimate experience of connection.
