India
These photographs were taken in the city of Delhi and the villages of Tasing, Gunti, and Kharkada. Photographing traditional healing practices in these various villages in the district of Alwar showed me how the healers’ work is so influenced by the context in which it is performed. Spiritualism is so deeply a part of Indian daily life that the work of the healers and shamans was not just an adjunct to modern medicine but part of a venerable, living form of indigenous knowledge, as well as helping people with their everyday problems. Their skills go beyond treating medical ailments and extend to predicting future events, retrieving lost items, and recovering injured souls. Indian society provides a supportive environment for healers and shamans to live and practice their craft.
