Sonora, Mexico bordering Arizona and New Mexico has been known for its table grapes which are marketed throughout Mexico and exported to the United States.
But even though Sonora accounts for 90% of Mexico’s table grape production, the grape pickers were not from Sonora. They came long distances from the poorest parts of Mexico. Entire families including children were harvesting in the vineyards in sweltering temperatures often higher than 100 degrees. These photos were taken in the 1980's.
