The Institute for a Good Death is a space for dialogue and education about mortality. It offers, among other things, support to people experiencing loss, helping them come to terms with death, deal with the emotions of bereavement or with practical issues such as fulfilling the will of the deceased. The institute also helps communities recognize death as a natural and important part of life. Celebrants support the bereaved and organize a farewell ceremony that honors the deceased person. Such a ceremony is still rare in Poland, a predominantly Catholic country where the Church has monopolized the celebration of most rites of passage. Although fewer and fewer Poles are participating in religious rituals, they are still reluctant to give up traditional church ceremonies such as funerals and child baptisms. Recent years, however, have brought changes: The Catholic Church is in crisis and many Polish women and men are turning to non-religious forms of spirituality, and, as in other countries, there is now a growing “positive death” movement.
