In the far South of Madagascar in the village of Maharihy, a young boy is measured during a health camp. MAHERY doctors and researchers are evaluating the prevalence of malnutrition and testing for vitamin deficiencies. In Madagascar 76.5 percent of the population lives in poverty, 50% of children under the age of 5 suffer from stunted growth and it is one of the ten countries in the world with the highest burden of chronic malnutrition.
Patricia is a 13yr old who lives in the coastal village of Marofototra. Although she attends school and plays with the other village children, she has a lot of responsibilities. She spends hour’s daily harvesting food for her family. The combination of climate change and over-fishing has had devastating impacts for her family and village. As fish is not always available Patricia relies on gathering smaller sea creatures like muscles.
Ravaoliny and her husband were early adopters of the chicken husbandry program. Early this year she was able to open up a store of her own where she proudly sells packaged goods, sodas and basic household items. Ravaoliny and her husband were also able to expand their home having separate huts for their kitchen and living quarters.

Wildlife hunting has increased to feed an ever-increasing human population. The most commonly hunted animals include: lemurs, carnivores, bats, bush pigs and tenrecs. There are 34 different species of hedgehog tenrec, all endemic to Madagascar. Unfortunately the tenrec is a very efficient reservoir for the bubonic plague. And yet they are eating them because they are undernourished, afflicted by disease, cannot afford dietary substitutes, or cannot access markets at all.
