The solution to achieving fairer pay for visual journalists isn’t necessarily complicated in principle. We know what’s needed: valuing their labor, ensuring transparency and trust, and building sustainable compensation models.

The real challenge lies in implementation. From an ethical or practical standpoint, what feels reasonable becomes much harder when you factor in market resistance, profit structures, and industry disruption.

But it’s not just the market. Cultural undervaluing of visual journalism, lack of protections for freelancers, and the rise of generative tech all contribute to the problem. Labelling is not enough but it is an important step forward.

Change is possible. It is already underway in some corners, through nonprofits, unions, and new business models like Visura and others. The hard part isn’t the solution—it’s building the will to act on it.
