Summary
The “Luna de agua” by the Solunar collective project was awarded a special mention by the Development Bank of Latin America’s contest Proyecto Creadoras in Venezuela.
A woman on board a boat is a sign of bad luck. And if she is on her moon, bleeding, the sea gets angry. This is one of the many superstitions of seafarers, constantly repeated on the Venezuelan coasts. But the economic, social and migration crisis has changed the panorama. Until recently, fishing had been a traditionally masculine activity in Venezuela, but since 2018 there has been a feminization of the trade that we have been mapping as the Solunar collective, especially in the states of Aragua, La Guaira and Falcon.
“Luna de agua” touches on the natural cycles that affect the fisherwomen’s lives: lunar phases and tides, infradian cycles of the female body and closed seasons. And at the same time, it speaks about the country's economic crisis and the struggle of women for spaces in the world of trade.
So far this ongoing project has taken many forms. It has been published at The Guardian, Vist Projects and exhibited at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica and the Galería de Arte Nacional of Venezuela.
