When Ana Iris Orobio was born in 1961, her grandmother had sacrificed a bird that in Guapi they call the 'singing bird', whose tongue was cut out by the midwife to put it under her granddaughter's. That way, the girl would be predestined to interpret the traditional melodies of her land.

When she turned five, her mother taught her to play the guasá; the woman played a note and Ana shook the instrument. Although by then her family identified her as a man named Otoniel, because she was born male, the girl did not hesitate to wear bell-shaped dresses, with a tight waist and a wide skirt; her favorites were yellow, sometimes with printed flowers.

As soon as she reached the age of ten, the singer-in-training made a statement to everyone she knew: "My name is not Otoniel. It's Ana. A year later, she met her first boyfriend, a fair-skinned, curly-haired young man.
