Berlin Action Day for Sexual Self-Determination - 20 September 2025

Every now and again I still get the opportunity to undertake work directly with NGO’s. A good friend of mine made me aware that ‘Das Bündnis für sexuelle Selbstbestimmung‘ was searching for a Photojournalist to document their action day in Berlin. I had photographed the group some years back so loosely knew the people and organization. So on the strength of this I spent yesterday documenting their protest day directly for them. The Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination consists of counselling centres, more than 40 different feminist and general political groups, associations, networks, trade unions, political parties and individuals. Founded in 2012 it has since organised counter protests against the annual nationwide ‘March for Life’ (formerly ‘1000 Kreuze Marsch’). The Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination considers the ‘March for Life’ gatherings operate under the guise of ‘protecting life’ and ‘the right to life,’ while actually calling for restrictions on women’s right to reproductive and sexual self-determination, such as a total ban on abortions throughout Europe. Since 2012, the Alliance for Sexual Self-Determination have been campaigning against the criminalisation and moral and social ostracism of abortion sought by Christian fundamentalist groups. They also regularly hold information events and offer advice on sexual self-determination, reproductive rights and health education.
