The tide that will not turn: a primer on the gangs of Latin America

Gang violence, death threats, extortion, and other forms of targeted violence have been zeroing in on Central America for several years. According to a survey by the United Nations High Commission on Refugees and UNICEF 20 percent of over 3,100 interviewees in family units identified violence including gang recruitment, extortion and domestic violence as a reason to leave their communities.

Unaccompanied children surveyed identified some type of violence as their main driver of their movement. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the strict restrictions on movement and border closures limited the options for people to escape danger.
