Grass grows through the asphalt and basalt blocks covered dike along the Marsdiep which protects the land and the Dutch city of Den Helder behind it. The Marsdiep is a sea strait between this town and the Wadden island of Texel (on the horizon). It connects the North Sea and the Wadden Sea and is the westernmost inlet into the Wadden Sea.
