A dike covered with asphalt, grass and basalt blocks along the Marsdiep protects the land and the Dutch city of Den Helder behind it. The Marsdiep is a sea strait between this town and the Wadden island of Texel, on the right. It connects the North Sea and the Wadden Sea and is the westernmost inlet into the Wadden Sea.
