Summary
All About Photo is thrilled to unveil our October Solo Exhibition, 'Blueprint' by Benita Mayo
The series began in 2020, following the sudden loss of her father, a moment that propelled her to confront her family’s past and Virginia’s indelible place in America’s most pivotal chapters—from slavery and the Civil War to the long struggle for civil rights. Through intimate landscapes and compelling portraits, Mayo examines the quiet resilience, mourning, and hope that weave through generations.
Guided by Toni Morrison’s call to “remember and do better,” Blueprint merges personal narrative with broader historical context. The result is a deeply contemplative body of work that illuminates overlooked histories, honors endurance, and invites reflection on memory, grief, and healing.
Mayo is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she is a resident artist at the McGuffey Art Center and an active member of the Charlottesville Black Arts Collective. Her work has been recognized internationally, including as a finalist in Critical Mass 2025 and winner of the 23rd Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Seeing Women, and has been exhibited at galleries including the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Center for Fine Art Photography.
Blueprint is a meditation on memory, history, and resilience, and a testament to photography’s power to illuminate the past and inspire dialogue.
