Color Study: Red
Summary
Artist and intuitive photographer J.Genevieve explores their portfolio through a series of narratives based on color. This series features the emotion, texture and language of red.
The secret, seductive way in which red is able to influence our moods and movements will forever fascinate me. I find that if I'm working with red, then inevitably I'm moved to explore the concept and expression of power. We see endless examples in the abuse cycle that is our modern society of what power is not (or rather, what we've been programmed to accept that it is) that it's important to explore and then center the truth of what power actually is. As I curated this study, I kept returning to that consideration both in words and visuals.

POWER IS
J.Genevieve
Power is
My mother
existing in my memory as a high kick, arcing protection over my small, bobbing body like a shield, her red lips smiling from above.
Power is
A moment
where you stripped your body bare (save the adornment and the shadow smeared across your eyes to catch the tears), returning, clinging to the seed within.
Primal instinct.
Ancient knowing.
It is a sensual act to return home to one’s true nature.
Power is
The remembrance
that while the betrayal was swift and, in a devastating way, soft, the fight was brutal - so fierce that her scream was red.
And the realization
that they could return here whenever ready, guided by their ever bleeding wound, in the fire of low tones, pulsing with life, dark and lush, reaching within and beyond to a propulsive release, intended to rewrite the narrative of this moment.
Power is
Not control
