Lichens and fresh, new, red blossoms are suspended in their growth by the third round of unprecedented, winter weather in Texas. The "new normal" is, no doubt, evidence of climate change, but many refuse, with violent indifference, I might add, to see it as such, February, 2023, Salado, Texas.

Delicate drops cling to the sclerified cells of palm fronds that make up the base of the palm tree. On a personal note, I cannot escape this image. It feels like a wildly crafted choker waiting to beautifully adorn a neck while simultaneously freezing a voice, February, 2023, Salado, Texas.

Ice droplets string themselves together into a beaded maze. While the frozen tangle suspended growth, as long as the freeze doesn't reach the cells of the plant, it has a fighting chance recover. While the ice is a threat, knocking it off can leave the plant too exposed. In its own way, the threat simultaneously offers a protection. To me, this tension is beautifully gruesome. I can't fully wrap my mind around it, but I can certainly explore it, February, 2023, Salado, Texas.

Ice causes the tree limbs to bend low to the earth. It's tempting to want to help find the trees relief from this weight by knocking off the ice. However, this can actually cause more harm as the branches become brittle in the cold and can snap if the ice is released too quickly. While some will break under the weight, most with simply bend to it, then slowly return to form as the ice melts, February, 2023, Salado, Texas.
