Jim looks for the beauty of design in the normally overlooked aspects of an object or setting. He focuses in on the details of the classic vintage car, the elements that make up a vast architectural structure, and the beauty of nature’s design in landscapes.
With the recent purchase of a mid century modern home in Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs, he has found new appreciation and inspiration from the great array of mid century modern buildings in the area and the beautiful desert landscapes.
As a student (BFA in Photographic Illustration) at Rochester Institute of Technology, Jim Riche had access the archive at Eastman House, now the International Museum of Photography. Early ‘exposure’ to the legendary Edward Steichen negatives and prints of 1920s New York cityscapes left a strong impression on Jim of the importance of light and shadow. In recent years Jim Riche has rediscovered his passion of looking at objects as a study of light, space, texture, and design – either working with the unique forms of classic cars, the arresting design of architecture or the sparseness of the southwest deserts and the Salton Sea.
After getting his first camera when he was 11, his enthusiasm for photography led to his first 35 mm SLR, a Nikkormat FTN, when he was 16. High school spent at the illustrious Brooklyn Tech confirmed Jim’s love for design, and he started at RIT on a design degree. One of his design courses was with the famous Bea Nettles, whose specialty was photography in mixed media. Jim saw that he could combine design and photography and switched his degree to focus on photography.
Following graduation, Jim taught photography workshops in Washington DC and was a teaching assistant at the Corcoran.
