Free, Waldorf, constructivist and non-directive pedagogies are some of the methodologies adopted by schools that build an alternative to traditional education. In these educational communities, a strong sense of community, the importance of affective and social bonds, emotional development and autonomy of children, learning from meaningful experiences are promoted; all of these aspects have been strongly affected in the context of the health emergency that forces social isolation.

2 Martin Adrian, 10 years old, is a very creative child, building his own toys and inventing monsters and superheroes. He is a student of the Nina Pacha Educational Community.
3 Elga Alquinga, 45, is a sociologist and educator. A 7th grade teacher at the Nina Pacha Educational Community, she is convinced that students need to develop skills rather than learn by rote and fill books.
4 Ikal Cazar, 6, poses in what was her favorite spot in the Achik Muyu Educational Community, the storytelling area. The school closed the physical space they were occupying as they could no longer pay the rent.
5 Sisa Lozano, a 33 year old teacher from Saraguro, is an accompanist of the middle school group and an agriculture and sewing instructor. In non-directive schools, such as Achik Muyu, the methodology is based on learning by the children rather than teaching. In this sense, adults have a role to play in accompanying the children, and not the classic figure of a teacher.
