Summary
Alzheimer, A story a lot of families have to go through. One day it just becomes impossible to continue to stay at home. It is the memory. We do not live any more in the same time. Taking care becomes a burden. One day much too difficult. Leaving home, the only exit.

Leaving Home is a deeply moving series that captures a pivotal moment in the lives of families affected by Alzheimer's disease.

Through the sensitive lens of Matthias Koch, we witness the final days when his father-in-law, suffering from this neurodegenerative disease, had to leave the house and village where he had spent 87 years of his life.Alzheimer's disease, responsible for nearly 60% of the 24 million dementia cases worldwide, affects not only memory but also the deep bonds between an individual and their surroundings. Each image in this series evokes both the beauty and sadness of forgotten memories and the heartbreak of leaving a place filled with a lifetime of experiences. The photographs in Leaving Home are imbued with silence and delicacy, subtly revealing the emotional weight of an inevitable separation. The intricate details of a lifetime—objects left behind, familiar corners—serve as poignant reminders of the intimate and painful impact this disease imposes, not only on the individual but on the entire family.
