The Love Letter to Donbas

Russian troops invaded Ukraine in 2014; the war between the two nations began in the Eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas. Since then, this place, formerly known for its industrial capabilities, has remained the epicenter of the conflict. After the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, many towns in Donbas were destroyed and then occupied by Russian troops, while others experienced daily missile strikes and the danger of further occupation.

In 2024, Ukraine lost control of approximately 3,600 square kilometers of territory to Russian forces, most of them in Donbas. Throughout the year, I've photographed daily life in the lively towns of Kurakhove, Selidove, and Pokrovsk. Now, they are either occupied or left by most of their population. Outnumbered, the Ukrainian army can't stop the Russian advance.

As someone born and raised in Donbas, watching my region's unfolding tragedy is painful. While photographing daily news in the area, I also focus on small frontline communities navigating their lives on the conflict edge, whose stories are often overlooked. While documenting the impact of war on civilians, industry, and the region's environment, my story describes Donbas' complex reality with love and compassion.
