‘‘The photographer Lindsay Morris pitched the magazine this week’s photo essay about a simulated mass shooting at a high school on Long Island. She lives in the area and had covered a similar training event for emergency responders. In talking to the Greenport police chief, Morris learned that this exercise was in the works. She had the news instinct to realize its importance, as well as its strangeness. In the exercise, a young man was assumed to have opened fire on students and teachers at an outdoor pep rally."
