Summary
Tirta Tirta (2022 - current) presents a perspective on the Balinese identity that is sceptical of there being a single “authentic” Bali today. Challenging the outdated visual identity that has become synonymous with tourism propaganda, post-colonial vanity, and populist rhetoric. Arguing that every individual’s recognition of Balinese-ness is relative to their personal relationship to the island. Illustrated by adopting water as a visual metaphor for Bali in every photograph, which altogether in a series provide some understanding of the kaleidoscope that is the Balinese identity.

An understanding that is necessary in order to accept my own claim in calling Bali home as a third-culture child of Indonesia.

Tirta Tirta
