Summary
Mind-Shift Mia Photo Fair 2024 Monica Silva - Galleria Paola Colombari
MONICA SILVA's project "Mind-Shift" ascends to explore the essence of our existence, challenging the audience to contemplate the ability to shape one's own destiny or to become a victim of external forces that divert from true will. In the analysis of this inner struggle, the invisible chains of social conventions emerge, suffocating authentic identity and leading to a passive acceptance of alien roles, laden with discomfort and identity crises.
In a delicate balance between awareness and unawareness, the artist explores the conflict of desiring inner serenity and experiencing a painful inertia. Through the lens of Pirandello, arises the dilemma of removing or maintaining the social mask. Monica Silva's vision subverts tradition, asserting that unveiling does not lead to the disappearance of identity, but rather to its emergence—a resistance to the fragmentation of the self in the inevitable ineptitude and madness of our time.
In this contemplation of the essence of truth and knowledge, the artist draws from her previous series "My Hidden Ego." Applying the therapeutic value of portraiture to the concept of disguise, her unique perspective filters identity through a magical eye, revealing the hidden self, often unknown even to the subjects portrayed.
The statuesque pose of the model, inspired by Rodin's famous "The Thinker," an icon of humanity pondering destiny, goes beyond mere contemplation. It affirms that suffering remains sterile until transformed into a resource. The work urges to break the chain of compromises towards our true selves, considering suffering as an opportunity for growth. The proposed journey is a path towards an unassailable inner serenity, an opportunity to face life with courage, aware that happiness is already within us, ready to emerge.
This intellectual journey is anchored by a curious coincidence: the photographer works on the shot without being aware of Rodin's designs on the Cambodia Royal Ballet, only discovering upon completion that her own photo resonates with those works. An apparently fortuitous encounter between classical art and contemporaneity, reminding us how art, beauty, and creativity belong to a single thread capable of traversing all past, present, and future epochs.
