On Brazil's Independence Day, September 7, protesters pro and against ex-president Jair Bolsonaro filled the streets of São Paulo. Bolsonaro is currently standing trial for plotting to stage a coup d'état in 2022, the same year he lost the election to President Lula.

Bolsonaro supporters, who call themselves "patriots", held American flags and signs in English asking Donald Trump for help. The U.S. president recently hit the Brazil with 50% tariffs and announced sanctions against the supreme court justice Alexandre de Moraes, in response to the ex-president's trial.
