The El Hew cemeteries are located in Naga Hammadi -Upper Egypt, these distinctive and unique form of cemeteries only exist in this part of Egypt. influenced by the ancient Egyption belief, these cemeteries were built in the west side of the Nile as the soul rests and prepare to its journey with the setting sun . Gravestones with the shape of Camel they stand on the ground, decorated with colours ,designs of lines , shapes, its a mixture of islamic, coptic designs and ancient Egyptian belief , as they considered the cemetery as the eternal place for housing the soul to be able to continue its journey after , they painted flowers in blue lines like the coptic designs, and added the few items to distinguish the cemeteries of men from the ones that are made for women so they painted for men , umbrella , rosary, tea pot , walking stick ,fez or hookah, As for women they painted very colourful decorations like neckless or hair braids, hand mirror ,scissor and comb. these paintings were done with the tempera technique with colour powder, eggs, sugar and water and kept until it ferments and with a reed stick kept in water till it becomes soft they start preparing the gravestone with beautiful decorations …
