Every year, the New York City Park Department stages a citywide bocce tournament. But first, there are championships for each borough.
In Queens, the championship is staged at the borough's newest bocce court, Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village, which happens to be  my neighborhood.
The tournament does not draw big crowds. Most of the onlookers are the players who have been eliminated in the early rounds. A few wives may show up late,
Teams are usually organized the day of the tournament. Bocce, unlike bowling, lends itself to a certain fluidity of affiliation.
