As an alternative to the sprawling IKEA warehouse stores, the Scandinavian furniture maker opened its first "urban store" — their term — in the US last month. In the space left behind by a bankrupt Sears outlet, IKEA built a scaled-down version of its easy-to-get-lost-in retail spot in Elmhurst, Queens. The company has similar stores in London and Paris, but nothing like it here,
The opening was months behind schedule due to the pandemic and totally unpublicized to keep shoppers down. Three people were in line when the doors opened on its first day. Shot for Queens Chronicle.
