L. Lou Davis
L. Lou Davis, 43, artist, small business owner, Columbia, MO (originally from Labelle, MO.)
I am L. I am on the spectrum somewhere between female and male. I am gender expansive. In order for me to be my authentic self, all aspects of myself must be represented. My gender is fluid. I am Queer.
As a person and an artist it has been important to find my voice. Being a marginalized person, I need security and structure, which I find in nature. Nature has been my sanctuary and my playground. It is my spiritual home. I am surrounded by trees linking the heavens and the earth and I am rooted in Good and Wholeness.
Over the last few years I have been drawn to the cityscape. It is symbolic of the multitude of undisciplined and uncultivated thoughts living in our collective consciousness. It is the wilderness. In those dark places, somehow I still find my light. It is important to shine my light because someone else might need to see that they are not alone.
Being my authentic self doesn't make me perfect: it means that I bring all of myself to every aspect of my life. Doing so makes me vulnerable and sometimes puts me in danger. I choose to be honest and transparent anyway. To quote Carl Jung, "The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are." I am Love. I am Peace. I am Wholeness.
