Public Project
Coney Island House
In June 2004, I encountered a DJ production group known as The Black Underground, who were performing House Music on the Coney Island Boardwalk, captivating a large crowd of dancers. Coincidentally, this vibrant day coincided with the Annual Mermaid Parade, marking my first exposure to both events. Since that day, I have returned repeatedly to document the infectious positive energy that radiates from these House Music gatherings. Over the years, a dynamic and openly vibrant community has emerged, united by a shared passion for House Music, which embodies positivity, dance, community, history, and love.
Through my lens, I aim to convey the essence of House Music and its profound impact on the community it fosters. Each gathering is a celebration of life, where individuals come together to dance and express themselves freely. The atmosphere is charged with joy and connection, transcending mere music to become a cultural phenomenon. My ongoing project captures not only the performances but also the rich tapestry of interactions that define this unique scene.
Initially, this series was strictly photographed in black and white, until 2015 when the project shifted to using color photographs.
