Summary
As my daughters get older and become who they are and who they are in relation to each other, I have documented the ways they have grown into themselves and their sisterhood. One is constantly seeking guidance and acceptance; the other seeks independence and freedom. There is a constant flex of power between the two, all the while maintaining enough tenderness so that they may call on each other when the dark is too scary to be alone.
mei mei means “little sister” in Chinese. jie jie means “big sister”.

Having children is having to raise little people into healthy, autonomous adults.
Having multiple children is raising two little people as well as nurturing their relationship and hoping they don’t strangle each other.

Sisterhood is often thought of as saccharine. It is often a relationship that is honored for its endurance and preciousness; but there is far more to sisterhood than the American simplification. Their relationship, much like their identities, are far more complicated. Girls, and children, in general are for more dynamic than most societies acknowledge.
