Public Project
High Voltage
For the past couple of years I've been exploring the blurring boundaries between performance and life. From my personal experience photographing and engaging with the young artists, many of whom are performers I’ve encountered in Bushwick (Brooklyn) and all the way to Berlin and elsewhere, I've found that there is a fine line between both. I find myself invigorated by these artists, experimenting toward the extreme to provoke themselves and their audience to confront sexual and visual participation by challenging social norms. I find a desire to change the balance of power by giving importance to the creation and participation and not so much on the finish product. As the spectator also becomes the performer, boundaries are crossed to redefine the real into what are our desires, both broken and entangled.
My project is an ongoing reflection of a Generation who is seeing the rise of a social purity movement that is imposing harsh restraints on sexual expression, contraception, abortion. and homosexuality, sharply restricting the freedom of individuals. As I understand it, this is there way of challenging the rules of law and defending our personal freedoms, now more then ever under fire.
