BERLIN, GERMANY-APRIL 02: The monument for Ernst Thälmann, leader of the Communist Party in Germany 1925-1933, in the district of Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany on April 02, 2022. The German political party CDU (Christian Democratic Union) is applying to have the statue of Ernst Thälmann removed because of the Russian Federation‘s invasion of Ukraine. They are calling for the monument to be dismantled and melted down with any proceeds from the procedure going to aid Ukraine in its war efforts. The German Communist leader Ernst Thälman was arrested on March 3, 1933, imprisoned and killed by the Nazis at Buchenwald concentration camp in 1944.
