In the morning of January 19th, 2025, I was taking pictures in the church of the Virgin of Regla in Havana when I saw a portrait on the altar of the black Virgin. The image of a young girl was within the frame (portraits of people are not frequent on the altar).Probably, on that day, not many people inside the church had realized of that portrait. But then, who was the girl within the frame?
To get some information, I asked to one of the employees in the temple. The story I heard from the employee was really disturbing. The portrayed girl was one of the 47 victims of Saratoga hotel's explosion on May 6th, 2022 in Havana. Furthermore, the employee told me that the portrait had been placed on the altar last year on November, after one of the aunts of the girl had requested permission to place it there. The aunt had commented that her niece was a devoted of the Virgin of Regla. When she died, she was only twenty years old, the employee added. So, still shocked, I went to the altar again and took some photos of that portrait. After that, I returned home.
During the next days, I spent hours looking for information social networks about the victims of Saratoga hotel's explosion on internet and social networks. I wanted to find the identity of the girl in the portrait. A
Although the online information was scarce, three days later, I found the first trial. On different internet sites appeared the image of María Isabel Bullaín Montes de Oca, a young girl who was employee of the hotel when the explosion happened. Her name was early reported among the victims of the accident. She looked like the girl within the portrait on the altar in the church. But then there were two problems. The girl on the altar had long hair. However, María Isabel Bullaín Montes had short hair on the internet portraits. At the same time, the girl within the portrait in the church was twenty according to the version of the employee in the church. However, Marįa Isabel was twenty nine when she died. So, I needed to clear these two points.
Three days later that I got a first trail, I found another portrait of María Isabel Bullaín Montes de Oca on an article published by 14 y medio with title "El rostro de la 45 víctimas de la explosión de gas del hotel Saratoga". In this portrait she appears wearing blue earrings and with long hair. According to the article, the portrait had been taken two days before the explosion.
Finally, one week later I discovered the the portrait in the church, I found what I was looking for, the Facebook profile of María Isabel Bulain Montes de Oca. Fortunately for me, it was on this social network still. Carefully, I started to look at the published photos on her profile. Every time, she looked more like the girl in the portrait on the altar. I had the presentiment that I was closer of getting the identity of the girl in the portrait on the altar. And finally, I got it. On July 28th, 2019. Maria Isabel posted a group of photos where she appears with a group of friends. I realized she was wearing the same necklace that the girl in the portrait on the altar was wearing. Now, I hadn't any doubt about the identity of that enigmatic portrait on the altar of the Virgin of Regla. She was Marįa Isabel Bullaín Montes de Oca, a young girl graduated from the career of tourism at the Havana's University and known as Mari among her friends and relatives.
RIP Maria Isabel Bullaín Montes de Oca and also, the rest of the victims of that tragic accident.
