Punching Barriers
Summary
Punching Barriers explores strength, vulnerability, and representation through the story of Millicent, a young female boxer in Jamestown. In a space known for producing male champions, she and others are reshaping what it means to fight both in and out of the ring. This exhibition invites us to reflect on how space, gender, and opportunity intersect, and how storytelling can provoke empathy, challenge norms, and spark change.
Through photo essays, I reflect on their life not only in the ring, but against societal pressures, reproductive health challenges, and gender expectations. The exhibition is a collective photograph of ambition, courage, representation and defiance to create an immersive experience that invites the audience into the world of these boxers. It seek to provok reflection, inspire conversation, connection, and build a community of support.Punching Barriers is both a tribute, a challenge and a call to acknowledge the strength that often goes unseen, and to rethink the spaces we create for women to occupy, grow and thrive in.
