After Hurricane Ian hit the westernmost part of Cuba on Tuesday, September 27, 2022, a general blackout stroke the entire island. In recent Cuban history, blackouts are common, especially since the 1990s and the end of the Soviet era. Flashlights, rechargeable lamps, and handmade light fixtures are everyday objects in Cuban households. However, there has never been a general blackout like this in the history of Cuba. An entire island of more than 42 square meters was black out for several hours. Reports said that municipalities and provinces were randomly in and out over the next two days. There are still areas where the power has not reached at all yet. The country had been experiencing fuel and food shortages for months, and blackouts and queues at stores were all too common. But in this new situation, all the food that ordinary people could store can be damaged, which adds insult to injury. Several protests have been reported across the country over the past few days as the situation is still developing.
